British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
