Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
