Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
