Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
